History

Formed in 1840 from Sanilac County, Lapeer County, St. Clair County and Saginaw County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Huron was created in 1840 from Sanilac, Lapeer, St. Clair, and Saginaw counties and named after Lake Huron. Initially not fully organized and attached to Saginaw for judicial purposes, Huron was detached from Saginaw in 1844 and attached to St. Clair, then to Sanilac in 1850. Huron became fully organized and independent on January 25, 1859, after being detached from both Sanilac and Tuscola counties. In 1880, Huron lost the Charity Islands to Bay County.
