History
Formed in 1887 from Ontonagon County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Gogebic was formed from Ontonagon County in 1887. In 1909, Michigan disputed its boundary with Wisconsin and took the case to the U.S. Supreme Court, claiming more Upper Peninsula territory. Michigan's case implicitly created an overlap between Gogebic County and Wisconsin counties Iron and Vilas. In 1926, the U.S. Supreme Court decided the boundary dispute entirely in favor of Wisconsin, ending the claimed overlap.
