History
Formed in 1840 from Michilimackinac County and Mackinac County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Cheboygan County was created on April 1, 1840, from Michilimackinac County, though it was not fully organized at that time and remained attached to Michilimackinac for judicial purposes. On January 29, 1853, Cheboygan became fully organized and detached from Mackinac County, while also gaining Wyandot County. Over the following years, the county lost territory to newly organized neighboring counties including Alpena, Presque Isle, and others as they separated for their own judicial and municipal purposes.
