History

Formed in 1817 from Wayne County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Monroe County was created on July 14, 1817, by Michigan Territory from Wayne County and included part of a disputed strip west of Lake Erie. In 1822, Monroe County lost territory to the creation of Lenawee County and Washtenaw County, and lost additional land to Wayne County. When Michigan became a state in 1837, Monroe County lost territory to Ohio as the boundary dispute over the strip running from Indiana to Lake Erie was settled in favor of Ohio.
