History

Formed in 1822 from Oakland County and St. Clair County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Lapeer was created in 1822 by Michigan Territory from Oakland and St. Clair counties, though it was initially attached to Oakland for administrative and judicial purposes. Lapeer was fully organized and detached from Oakland in 1835, but immediately lost territory to the creation of Genesee County that same year. Over the following decades, Lapeer experienced multiple boundary adjustments, losing land to Genesee, Huron, Tuscola, and Sanilac counties, and exchanging territory with Tuscola County in 1855.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
