History
Formed in 1831 from Kalamazoo County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Gratiot County was created on March 2, 1831, from non-county area attached to Kalamazoo County. The county was initially unorganized and was attached to Saginaw County for judicial purposes in 1836, with its attachment confirmed in 1840. In 1845, part of Gratiot was detached from Saginaw and attached to Clinton County for administrative and judicial purposes. Gratiot County became fully organized in 1855, when it was detached from both Clinton and Saginaw counties.
