History

Formed in 1840 from Michilimackinac County, Mackinac County and Saginaw County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Originally named Anamickee, the county was created in 1840 but not fully organized, remaining attached to Michilimackinac County for judicial purposes. It was renamed Alpena on March 8, 1843, and fully organized in 1857 after being detached from Cheboygan County. Over the following decades, several counties were detached from Alpena to be organized independently: Presque Isle in 1871 and Montmorency in 1881.
