History
Formed in 1822 from Oakland County and St. Clair County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Shiawassee County was created by Michigan Territory on September 10, 1822, from Oakland, St. Clair, and Non-County Area 2, but was not fully organized and was attached to Oakland for administrative and judicial purposes. Over the next fifteen years, Shiawassee lost territory to the creation of Ingham, Livingston, and Genesee counties. The county was fully organized and detached from Genesee on March 18, 1837, after which Clinton was attached to it for judicial purposes until Clinton's full organization in 1839.
