History
Formed in 1860 from La Pointe County and Bayfield County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Ashland County was created on June 5, 1860, from La Pointe (now Bayfield) County. Over the following decades, Ashland ceded territory to neighboring counties: it lost land to Bayfield in 1866 and 1869, contributed to the creation of Sawyer County in 1883, and lost area to Iron County in 1893. In 1873, Ashland became fully organized and independent after being attached to Bayfield for judicial purposes.
