History

Formed in 1840 from Michilimackinac County and Mackinac County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Originally named Okkuddo when created in 1840, the county was renamed Otsego in 1843. Otsego was attached to various neighboring counties for judicial and municipal purposes until 1875, when it became fully organized and independent. In 1869, part of Otsego was lost to the re-creation of Charlevoix County.
