History

Formed in 1840 from Saginaw County, Michilimackinac County and Mackinac County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Originally named Negwegon, the county was created in 1840 from territory that included parts of Saginaw and Michilimackinac counties, and was initially attached to Mackinac County for judicial purposes. The county was renamed Alcona in 1843, and over the next several decades was successively attached to Cheboygan, Alpena, and Iosco counties for judicial and municipal purposes. Alcona was fully organized in 1869 after being detached from Iosco County, at which time Oscoda County was attached to it; Oscoda was later detached as a separate county in 1881.
