History
Formed in 1893 from Ashland County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Iron County was created from Ashland County on March 3, 1893, and gained territory from Oneida County on April 15, 1893. The county was named after iron. Michigan's implicit overlap of Iron County ended in 1926 when the U.S. Supreme Court decided a boundary dispute between Michigan and Wisconsin entirely in favor of Wisconsin.
