History
Formed in 1855 from Brown County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Doniphan County was created on August 25, 1855, by Kansas Territory from non-county area, and was named after Alexander William Doniphan. The county was fully organized on September 18, 1855, and became a county in the state of Kansas on January 29, 1861. In 1950, Doniphan exchanged small areas with Atchison County and lost territory to Buchanan County, Missouri, to accommodate changes in the course of the Missouri River.
