History

Formed in 1867 from Butler County and Marion County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Sumner County was created on February 26, 1867 from Butler and Marion counties but was not fully organized at that time. The county was named after Charles Sumner. Sumner was attached to Butler for judicial purposes until it was fully organized on February 7, 1871, when it was detached.
