History

Formed in 1867 from Riley County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Ellis County was created from Riley County on February 26, 1867, though it was not fully organized until October 28, 1867. Between 1868 and 1881, several neighboring counties were attached to Ellis for judicial purposes as they were organized, including Graham, Ness, Rooks, Rush, Trego, Gove, and Wallace, gradually detaching as each became fully organized.
