History

Formed in 1873 from Ford County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Kearny County was created from Ford County in 1873 but was not fully organized and was attached to Ford for judicial purposes. In 1883, Kearny County lost all its territory to Hamilton and to the creation of Finney County and was eliminated. The county was re-created in 1887 from Finney and Hamilton with the same boundaries as before, and became fully organized in 1888. In 1889, the spelling of the county name was changed from Kearney to Kearny.
