History

Formed in 1855 from Shawnee County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Wabaunsee County was created from Shawnee County on August 25, 1855, as Richardson County, but it was not fully organized and was attached to Shawnee County for civil and military purposes. On February 11, 1859, Richardson County was renamed Wabaunsee County, named after Waubonsie, and was fully organized and detached from Shawnee County. Wabaunsee County became a county in the state of Kansas on January 29, 1861. Between 1860 and 1873, the county gained and lost territory in adjustments with Davis, Morris, Riley, and other neighboring counties.
