History

Formed in 1867 from Marion County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Barber County was created from Marion County in 1867 but was not fully organized at that time. The county was named after Thomas Barber and received additional land from Harper and Pratt counties in 1873. Barber County was fully organized in 1873, and its spelling was changed from Barbour to Barber in 1883.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
