History
Formed in 1867 from Riley County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Mitchell County was created from Riley County on February 26, 1867, and named after William D. Mitchell. The county was initially not fully organized and was attached to Ottawa County for judicial purposes beginning in March 1867. Mitchell was fully organized and detached from Ottawa on October 4, 1870, and later briefly served as a judicial attachment point for Osborne County from March to September 1871.
