History

Formed in 1855 from Allen County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Washington County was created by Kansas Territory on August 25, 1855, from non-county area and initially attached to Allen County for judicial purposes. After losing territory to non-county area in 1857, Washington was re-created and attached to Marshall County, finally becoming fully organized and detached from Marshall on April 9, 1860. Washington became a county in the state of Kansas on January 29, 1861, and later gained a small area from Marshall County in 1893.
