History

Founded in 1867

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

McPherson County was created from Marion County on February 26, 1867, but was not fully organized at that time. It was attached to Marion County for judicial purposes, then to Saline County, before being fully organized and detached from Saline County on March 1, 1870. The county was named after James B. McPherson. In 1872, McPherson County lost territory to the creation of Harvey County and to Reno County.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
