History

Formed in 1855 from Madison County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Wise County was created by Kansas Territory in 1855 from non-county area and initially attached to Madison County for civil and military purposes. In 1857, Wise was detached from Madison and attached to Breckenridge (now Lyon) for civil and military purposes. Wise was renamed Morris in 1859, fully organized, and detached from Breckenridge; it gained territory from Davis (now Geary) but lost territory to the creation of Chase County. Morris became a county in the state of Kansas in 1861 and underwent several boundary adjustments with neighboring counties through the 1870s.
