History

Formed in 1860 from Riley County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Ottawa was created by Kansas Territory from Non-County Area 2 attached to Riley on February 27, 1860, but was not fully organized. After Kansas statehood in 1861, Ottawa was attached to other counties for judicial purposes over several years, including Davis (now Geary) and Saline. Ottawa became fully organized and detached from Saline on July 31, 1866. Between 1867 and 1871, neighboring counties were temporarily attached to Ottawa for judicial purposes, but were detached and fully organized as they grew.
