History
Formed in 1867 from Riley County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Smith County was created in 1867 from Riley County but was not fully organized at its formation. For several years, Smith County was attached to other counties for judicial purposes: first to Ottawa in 1868, then to Jewell in 1871. The county became fully organized and independent on March 9, 1872.
