History

Formed in 1860 from Riley County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Saline County was created on February 15, 1860, by Kansas Territory from Non-County Area 2, initially attached to Riley County and not fully organized. The county was named after the Saline River. Saline was fully organized on April 26, 1860, and became a county in the state of Kansas on January 29, 1861. Over the following decade, several counties—including Ottawa, Ellsworth, Lincoln, and McPherson—were temporarily attached to Saline for judicial purposes before being fully organized and detached.
