History

Formed in 1867 from Riley County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Rooks County was created from Riley County and Non-County Area 2, though it was not fully organized at the time. For several years, Rooks was attached to Ellis County for judicial purposes, then fully organized in 1872. From 1873 onward, several neighboring counties were attached to Rooks for judicial purposes, including Graham, Sheridan, Sherman, and Thomas; these counties gradually detached as they became fully organized.
