History

Founded in 1855

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Jefferson County was created by Kansas Territory from non-county area on August 25, 1855. It became a county in the state of Kansas on January 29, 1861. The county lost territory to Douglas County in 1865 and had a boundary adjustment with Shawnee County in 1899.
