History
Formed in 1867 from Marion County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Pratt County was created from Marion County in 1867 but was not fully organized at its founding. The county was attached to other counties for judicial purposes over the following years: Marion (1867), Ellsworth (1869), Reno (1873), and Pawnee (1875). Pratt County lost territory to Barber County in 1873 and to Stafford County in 1879, when the Kansas Supreme Court ruled a previous land transfer unconstitutional. The county was fully organized and detached from Pawnee County on July 29, 1879.
