History

Founded in 1812

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Ste. Genevieve District was created within the District of Louisiana on October 1, 1804, and became a district in Louisiana Territory when the District of Louisiana was renamed on July 4, 1805. The district became Ste. Genevieve County on December 7, 1812, when its boundaries were redefined and it lost territory to St. Louis and to non-county area. Between 1813 and 1821, the county lost territory to the creation of Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Perry, and St. Francois Counties.
