History

Formed in 1795 from St. Clair County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Randolph County was created by the Northwest Territory from St. Clair County. It was named after Edmund Randolph. The county went through several territorial transitions: it became part of Indiana Territory in 1800, then Illinois Territory in 1809, and finally became a county in the state of Illinois in 1818.
