History

Formed in 1819 from Cape Girardeau County and Ste. Genevieve County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Madison County was named after James Madison and was created in 1819 from Cape Girardeau and Ste. Genevieve counties. In 1843, Madison exchanged land with Shannon County. In 1849, the county lost land to Reynolds and Wayne counties, and in 1857, it lost more land to the creation of Iron County.
