History
Founded in 1836
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Clark County was created on December 16, 1836, from Non-County Area 19. A territorial dispute arose when the Missouri legislature extended Clark's northern boundary into Iowa Territory in 1838, overlapping the area of Van Buren County, Iowa. The U.S. Supreme Court settled the boundary dispute in 1849 by choosing the Indian boundary line established in 1816, which ended Clark's overlap with Van Buren County. Non-County Area 26 was attached to Clark in 1837 but was lost to the creation of Scotland County in 1841.
