History
Founded in 1841
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Scotland County was created in 1841 from three non-county areas and named after Scotland. In 1843, Knox County was created from Scotland County territory, though Knox remained attached to Scotland for civil and military purposes until it was fully organized in 1845. An 1849 U.S. Supreme Court decision settled a boundary dispute between Missouri and Iowa by establishing the Indian boundary line run by John C. Sullivan in 1816 as the state line.
