History
Formed in 1857 from Madison County, Reynolds County, St. Francois County, Washington County and Wayne County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Iron County was created on February 17, 1857, from parts of Madison, Reynolds, St. Francois, Washington, and Wayne counties. The county was named after iron ore, a natural resource found in the area. Iron County experienced multiple boundary changes over the following decades, gaining and losing territory to neighboring counties including Crawford, Dent, and Reynolds between 1857 and 1879.
