History

Founded in 1837

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Linn County was created from Non-County Area 6 on January 6, 1837, and soon gained territory from Livingston County. Over the following years, the county lost land to the creation of Highland (later Sullivan) and Putnam counties, and later exchanged territory with Chariton and Livingston counties.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
