History

Formed in 1821 from Jefferson County, Ste. Genevieve County and Washington County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

St. Francois County was created from Jefferson, Ste. Genevieve, and Washington counties and named after the St. Francis River. The county's boundaries changed several times: it gained territory from Washington County in 1833, lost land to Ste. Genevieve County in 1843, and lost land to the new Iron County in 1857 while gaining from Washington County again.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
