History
Formed in 1831 from Wayne County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Ripley County was created on January 12, 1831, from Wayne County, but was not fully organized and remained attached to Wayne County for civil and military purposes until 1833, when it gained land from Non-County Area 13 and was fully organized. The county was named after Eleazer Wheelock Ripley. Over its early history, Ripley County experienced numerous boundary changes, including the creation of Shannon County in 1837, Ozark County in 1841, Oregon County in 1841, and Carter County in 1859, along with various exchanges with neighboring counties.
