History

Formed in 1833 from Jackson County and Lafayette County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Van Buren County was created on January 16, 1833, from Jackson and Lafayette counties but was not fully organized and was attached to Jackson for all civil and military purposes. In 1835, Van Buren was fully organized and detached from Jackson, while Bates County was attached to it for administrative purposes. Van Buren was renamed Cass on February 2, 1849, after Lewis Cass. Cass County's boundaries changed several times through the 1830s and 1850s as new counties were created or reorganized.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
