History
Formed in 1822 from Ralls County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Marion County was created from Ralls County on December 14, 1822, but remained attached to Ralls for military, civil, and judicial purposes until it was fully organized in 1826. The county was named after Francis Marion and later lost territory to the creation of Monroe, Lewis, Shelby, and Macon counties between 1831 and 1837, though it gained some land back from Monroe in 1843.
