History
Formed in 1837 from Crawford County, Ripley County and Washington County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Shannon County was created on January 14, 1837, from Crawford and Ripley counties. The county was named after George Shannon. Through the 19th century, Shannon County underwent multiple boundary adjustments, gaining and losing territory to neighboring counties including Dent, Wayne, Reynolds, and Carter, and exchanging land with Madison and Reynolds.
