History

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Chariton County was created in 1821 from Howard and Pike counties and named after the Chariton River. The county's boundaries shifted through the nineteenth century: it lost territory to the creation of Livingston County in 1837 and to Linn County in 1845.
