History
Formed in 1833 from Clay County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Clinton County was created from Clay County on January 2, 1833, initially with attached unorganized territory. Between 1838 and 1843, the county lost parts of its attached territory to the creation of Buchanan, Platte, De Kalb, and Gentry Counties. Gentry County, created in 1841 but not fully organized, was attached to Clinton for civil and military purposes until it was fully organized and detached in 1845.
