History
Formed in 1843 from Shannon County and Wright County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Originally named Ashley, the county was created from Shannon, Wright, and Non-County Area 33 in 1843, though it remained unorganized and attached to Shannon and Wright for civil and military purposes. In 1845, Ashley was renamed Texas, fully organized, and detached from Shannon and Wright. The county experienced several boundary changes over the following decades, losing and gaining territory to neighboring counties including Shannon, Dent, and Douglas.
