History
Formed in 1851 from Crawford County and Shannon County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Dent County was created on February 10, 1851, from Crawford and Shannon counties and named after Lewis Dent. The county was briefly eliminated in December 1855 when it was lost to Crawford, but was re-created just four days later from Crawford on December 4, 1855. Over the following decades, Dent County gained and lost territory through boundary adjustments with neighboring counties including Texas, Iron, Reynolds, and Shannon.
