History
Formed in 1834 from Van Buren County, Cass County and Lafayette County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Johnson County was created from Van Buren (now Cass) and Lafayette. The county was named after Richard Mentor Johnson. In 1847, Johnson lost territory to the creation of Donaldson, an extinct county, though Donaldson was not fully organized and its unorganized part was attached to Johnson for all civil and military purposes. In 1849, the creation of Donaldson was repealed and Johnson regained the part of Donaldson it had previously held.
