History

Formed in 1822 from Ray County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Clay County was created on January 2, 1822, from Ray County and unorganized federal territory. The county's boundaries changed several times in its early years as new counties were organized from adjacent territory.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
