History
Formed in 1816 from St. Charles County and St. Louis County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Howard County was created by the Missouri Territory on March 1, 1816, from St. Charles, St. Louis, and Washington counties, and initially included part of present-day Iowa. The county was named after Benjamin Howard. Howard lost territory to the creation of Cooper County in 1819, and further lost land in 1821 when Boone, Chariton, and Ray counties were created, and the county's portion in present-day Iowa was eliminated.
