History

Founded in 1833

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Greene County was created from Non-County Area 16 and named after Nathanael Greene. The county gained and lost territory through several boundary adjustments in the 19th century, including losses to the creation of Barry, Polk, Pulaski, Taney, White, and Webster counties.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
