History

Formed in 1838 from Barry County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Newton County was created from Barry County in 1838, with overlapping territory that was resolved over the following years through adjustments with Barry, Lawrence, Jasper, and other counties. In 1847, Newton County lost territory to the creation of Seneca, which was later renamed McDonald County and fully organized in 1849.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
