History

Formed in 1851 from Polk County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Originally named Wahkaw and created from Polk County in 1851, it was renamed Woodbury in 1853 and fully organized that same year. Woodbury County was named after Levi Woodbury. As Woodbury was fully organized, eleven counties were attached to it for administrative purposes, but between 1857 and 1860, all of them—Buena Vista, Cherokee, Clay, Dickinson, Ida, O'Brien, Plymouth, and Sioux—became fully organized and detached as separate counties.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
